I’m probably preaching to the choir here, but there’s a lot of proto Red Dwarf in Grant & Naylor’s Radio 4 sketch shows Cliche and Son Of Cliche.

If you want to hear the genesis and development of Hol Rock, have a listen if you can. It’s always fascinating.

Today though, let’s look at a sketch that seems to have informed the character of Rimmer in a very strong way.

And here’s the same idea expressed on screen a few years later.

I wonder how Chris Barrie felt being on the other side of that sketch as Rimmer, hearing those lines from his past self coming back at him from another actor.

The idea of the timetable reached its peak in the novel Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers.
