SNL Movies

It feels like there have been more movies based on Saturday Night Live sketches that there actually have been. A lot of the ones that I might think are SNL ones, are actually just cast alum making unrelated movies. So here’s a quick walk through the ones that are directly based on sketches.

First, and probaly most famous, is The Blues Brothers (and I guess it’s sequel).

As a bonus, here’s a sketch from SNL itself.

It was twelve years before Lorne Michaels produced another movie based on SNL content. And that was Wayne’s World (and also it’s sequel). I love this teaser trailer that was made specially to sit before The Addams Family.

The following year, Michaels dug back into the catalogue and ressurected the Coneheads.

in 1994, Julia Sweeney starred as the titular It’s Pat.

And then it was Al Franken’s turn in the 1995 movie Stuart Saves His Family.

The first of Will Ferrell’s contributions was A Night At The Roxbury.

Which he followed up with a co-starring role in Superstar alongside Molly Shannon.

As the new millenium came, then so did Tim Meadows and The Ladies Man.

Before the last of the bunch, MacGruber, a timely spoof of MacGyver … in 2010.

So there we have. A playlist of eleven (counting sequels) of SNL movies for you to spend watching during lockdown.

Keanu Reeves is 56. That makes him eight years older than Clive Dunn was when he was first cast in Dad’s Army. But don’t panic, Clive Dunn was always playing much older characters than his own age. Keanu Reeves is 56. That makes him seven years older than Stephanie Cole was when she was first…
