Another stand up showcase that inevitably lead to doing it myself was BBC One’s The Stand Up Show, hosted variously by Tommy Tiernan, Ardal O’Hanlon, and Barry Cryer. Yes, back then the telly people weren’t so stupid as to ignore talented people based on age. That said, here’s a middle class white bloke called Simon Pegg doing a rare set:

Other much earlier shows from the 1980s had a profound effect on my desire to write and sometimes perform comedy, including The Young Ones, Saturday Live, The Comic Strip Presents, French & Saunders and Victoria Wood As Seen On TV – all of which you can find on DVD and are well worth looking at. You might not be able to find Happy Families or Girls On Top though.
