Lost Memories Of The Young Ones

In the 80s, and part of the 90s, most weeks we would go and visit my Gran and Grandpa in Bristol.

Sometime in the eary part of 1984, I stayed in and played with the solitaire marbles, or played tiddly winks with my brother – I now realise this was actually a toy roulette set, and we used the betting chips, flicking them into the ‘bowl’, which was actually the roulette wheel sans wheel.

Meanwhile, my older brother and sister went for a walk down the Gloucester Road with my granddad.

Upon their return, they were all a flutter of excitement, because they had wandered into the OB filming of a TV show.

Namely this bit, of that TV show.

Yup, that’s right, my sister and brother got to see that being filmed, and even had a chance to buy some autograph books and have them signed by all four of the Bachelor Boys.

I have a vague memory of seeing some photos a while later of Vyvyan’s car too.

All of those autographs and photos promptly got lost, never to be seen again.

This is enough of a crap anecdote in and of itself, but it got me thinking some more.

I have no memory of seeing the first series of The Young Ones until I bought them on VHS in the early 1990s. I always thought my first exposure to the series was series two.

Except, I definitely remember being really excited that my brother and sister had met The Young Ones from the telly show I watched.

Even though they met them as they filmed series 2.

Time and my brain are both stupid creatures.

Proctology: A Bottom Examination is my deep dive into Bottom, the hit BBC Two sitcom starring Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson. That’s…
